Adjustable Hospital Beds for Home Care

Adjustable Hospital Beds for Home Care

Adjustable Hospital Beds for Home Care or assisted living environments are used to better meet the needs of loved ones who have reduced or limited mobility, or require special care due to a medical condition. To meet these needs, adjustable hospital beds offer a variety of positions to assist with care, eating, reading, watching TV, getting in and out of bed, and improve sleeping. Hospital Bed Sizes

Hospital beds come in an industry-wide standard size of 36” wide by 80” long. This standard patient bed size is a bit narrower and longer than the standard size of 39” wide x 75” long for twin non-hospital beds. This size distinction is important to know when buying bed sheets because twin-sized bed sheets do not necessarily fit hospital beds properly. Fortunately, NewLeaf Home Medical offers a variety of bed linens and sheet sets specifically sized to fit most every hospital bed size.

As indicated above, hospital beds generally come in a standard size of 36” wide. However, bed sizes are also available in widths of 39", 42", 48", 54" and 60", which you will find in our Bariatric Beds and luxury (non-hospital looking) Adjustable Beds departments (both are further discussed below). And for taller patients, sleep surface lengths are also available in 84" and 86" lengths.

Types of Beds

Hospital beds come in four main categories when it comes to adjustability: Manual (not sold at NewLeaf), Semi-Electric Hospital Beds, Full-Electric Hospital BedsLow Hospital Beds, and Specialty Long Term Care BedsFull-Electric models offer fully powered Head, Foot and Overall Height adjustability. Low models provide a lower height from the ground (as low as 9.5") compared to standard Semi- and Full-Electric beds. Low Beds are ideal for users with Alzheimer's, Dementia, or others who may be considered a fall risk. Specialty Long Term Care models offer additional unique features and benefits to treat chronic impairments that may reduce the degree of independence. Fully electric and adjustable, Long Term Care Beds are extra durable, offer lower height ranges, as well as specialized treatment positions like Trendelenburg, Reverse Trendelenburg, and Cardiac Chair, which may be required to meet the user's unique special care needs. Semi-Electric models offer powered Head and Foot section adjustment, with manual Overall Height adjustment operation by a provided hand crank. The below table shows the adjustable functionality for each bed group.

Semi-Electric Motorized Motorized Hand Crank

Adjustable Beds, Non-Hospital

Adjustable Beds are made from high quality materials and have a more "homey" look than typical "hospital" medical beds. Unlike hospital beds, which typically offer a 36” wide sleep surface (exception is Bariatric classified beds), adjustable beds come in normal bed widths for twin, full, queen, and king sizes. Because they use standard bed widths, these beds come ready to attach your own standard-size decorative headboard or footboard to match your decor. Though these adjustable beds can be used by anyone, optional Bed Side Rails help make these beds a perfect solution for users suffering from a medical condition, disability, or mobility impairment. Besides having electronic adjustments of the Head and Foot section—and Overall Height Adjustment with Hi-Lo models—you can add optional Dual-Timed Heat & Massage with Under-Bed Safety Lighting, and Wireless Remotes.

Bariatric Beds

Bariatric Beds are heavy duty beds made specifically for larger patients who weigh from 350 lbs to 1,000 lbs. Bariatric beds are extra wide compared to other medical beds and are generally available in widths of 42”, 48” or 54”.
